Getting Started When You're Out of Shape: A Simple Guide:

If you’re feeling stuck, out of shape, or even intimidated by the idea of working out, you’re not alone. The hardest part isn’t the exercise itself—it’s getting started. You don’t need to be “fit” to begin. You just need to take that first step. Here’s how:

1. Accept Where You Are—And That It’s Okay

It’s easy to look at where you “should” be and feel overwhelmed. But real progress starts with accepting where you are today. You’re not broken. You don’t need to be “fixed.” You just need a plan and consistency. Everyone has different life circumstances and challenges, don’t compare yourself to someone because no two people have the same situation.

2. Start With Movement, Not Intensity

Forget about running miles or lifting heavy weights right away. Instead, start small:

- Take a 5-10 minute walk daily

- Try sitting down and standing up from a chair 10 times (a basic squat)

- Stretch for a few minutes in the morning

Small, consistent movements matter more than doing something extreme and burning out.

3. Stop Looking for the Perfect Plan

Many people get stuck in research mode, looking for the “best” diet or workout. But the best plan is the one you actually do. I hear from a lot of people at this stage. They reach out, acknowledging they need a change, but struggle to take that next step. It’s completely normal to feel this way. The key is not letting the search for the “perfect” plan keep you from taking action. Instead of waiting until everything feels just right, commit to one small action today. Whether it’s a short walk, drinking more water, or reaching out for support, taking that step moves you forward. Picking up the phone can feel like an extremely heavy weight, but please know that calling or messaging us will be met with only support and encouragement.

4. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection

You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be a little better than yesterday. If you walked for 5 minutes today, try 6 minutes tomorrow. If you did 3 squats, aim for 4 next time. Small wins build real change.

5. Find Support

You don’t have to do this alone. Having someone to guide and encourage you makes a huge difference. That’s what I do at Mountain Momentum Fitness- help people who feel stuck finally get moving and build confidence in their bodies and in themselves.

If you're ready to take the next step, let’s set up a time to talk. No pressure, just a conversation about where you’re at and how to move forward. The hardest part is reaching out—but if you’ve read this far, you’re already on your way.
